1/26/17 Magazine Research Information
Today we read an article called "Brand Identity". Basically throughout the article it was somewhat interviewing a man, Harvey Marcus, and his girlfriend, Cassie Steer, about their thoughts on the magazine business. Marcus is an editor at Schon, a London based magazine focused on fashion and art. His girlfriend is the former beauty director for the U.K. edition of the fashion magazine InStyle. Marcus explained that he wouldn't buy one of the magazines at the stand they were at because it wasn't worth the money. Almost all of these magazines can be found online, or at least the information inside could be. He said that social media has taken the jobs of magazines and that since all of the famous people that are focused on in these magazines have social media accounts, we will hear news firsthand about them from them. He went on to say that the bookazines are doing much better. People tend to buy these because the deem the extensive amount of information inside important. This article helped to open my eyes. I believe that in order to make my magazine successful it either needs to focus on athletes and information not available online or it needs to be a bookazine. I believe the certain types of article that Hannah and I write are special because we are focusing on different sports and places, writing articles that haven't been written. I believe that as long as we keep our articles off online, people will feel the need to buy our magazines. Athletes will be genuinely interested in the articles we are producing. Although I do believe the article made some good points, and I think Hannah and I may look into doing a bookazine edition every few months or so to boost revenue. - Hope Bumgarner

1/23/17 Midterm Revisions and Improvements
Throughout presenting our project to the class, Hannah and I received a lot of constructive criticism. First, Mr. Elsbree explained that I should possibly change the layout of the words on my cover page to make them more fitted around Nicks face. As well as this he explained to us that we may want to rethink using a colored background because printing this magazine would cost more for the colored background. Specifically in my case, Mr. Elsbree suggested that I try to get more of a variety of pictures since all of the pictures I feature are from one photo shoot with Nick. Throughout the next few weeks I will be working to make some of these changes to finalize my magazine. I am still waiting on feedback of the article I wrote to see if I need to edit it at all. Expect updates soon! - Hope Bumgarner

1/8/17 Awards
Hannah and I have done extensive research on similar magazines to Athletica and we looked into the type of awards and special recognitions some of them have collected over the years. There are the National Magazine Awards also known as the Ellie Awards that honor outstanding magazines for a variety of reasons. The current categories are listed below and the judges pick one winner for each. Sports Illustrated won the General Excellence Award, Personal Service Award, Leisure Interest Award, and The Feature Writing Award. ESPN The Magazine won the General Excellence Award, Design Award, and The Feature Photography Award. Bicycling won the Public Interest Award. Hannah and I believe our magazine will collect many of these awards after it becomes well established. - Hope Bumgarner

1/8/17 Distribution Numbers for other magazines
Below are the top 10 sports magazines listed in order with their most recent distribution numbers. Hannah and I predict that our first issues distribution numbers will be somewhere around 1,000,000 but we believe within the first year we will be in the top 5 magazines with distribution numbers similar to Bicycling. We plan to advertise for our new magazine with online Ads and flyers in nutrition and sports stores and restaurants. - Hope Bumgarner

1/8/17 Athletica vs. other magazines
Athletica is quite similar to other magazines in terms of the format but there are some things about Athletica that are very unique. First off, Athletica is a magazine that focuses not only on sports or nutrition but both and how they work together. While most magazines are either focused on sports as one or health as one, Athletica targets to show how fitness and nutrition go hand in hand in performance and health. Along with this, Athletica focuses on just one sport each month. In my flat plan I included articles based on different sports but Hannah and I decided that our magazine would be more unique if we just premiered one sport per month and focused all articles and nutrition on that specific sport. We plan to edit our flat plan to fit this idea. Also, on the nutrition side of our magazine we try to give tips and information on foods and meal plans that will help regulate your health in order to boost performance for whatever sport the magazine is focused on that month. I believe because of our differences from other magazine, Athletica will be very popular. - Hope Bumgarner
1/8/17 Interview
Over the weekend I was able to get in contact with Nick and ask some questions regarding my article. First, I had him give me a basic overview of his schedule for a week and then we discussed details that I will mention in my article. He told me that Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday are his busiest days of the week. Typically he starts off one of these days by having a one hour workout in the morning. He has the option of 7am or 8am. Nick usually prefers to go to the 7am workout so he has a little extra time between his workout and class. He returns to his dorm after is workout, takes a nap, and then heads to class at 11:15 (no class on Saturday). He is in class for an hour. Baseball practice is between 130-530 so nick grabs something to eat after class and then quickly goes to his dorm to change. His practice doesn't have an exact start time so he usually shows up between 2-230 and stays until 530-6 because pitchers have to stay later on some days. After practice Nick grabs dinner and then goes to tutoring anytime between 6-10. He usually arrives around 730 and stays the rest of the time, he only goes on days he feels he needs extra help because tutoring is optional. After tutoring Nick goes back to his dorm, finishes any homework he has left, and then gets ready for bed. On Tuesday and Thursday, Nicks schedule is the same except he does not have morning workouts. Sunday is their only day off. Nick usually spends his time finishing up any assignments he has left over from the week and then he hangs out with friends and try's to relax. Throughout this interview I gained insight into the busy schedule of a D1 college athlete. - Hope Bumgarner

1/6/17 Flat Plan
I decided to use a program I am much more comfortable with to produce my flat plan, Microsoft Publisher. After brainstorming with Hannah, we came up with flat plan formats that are similar to each others that we believe will best provide our information to our readers. I decided on what articles my issue with report on and I have included 2 page spreads, 4 page spreads, and a 6 page spread for my cover story. I decided that the article I am writing will not be the cover story but instead I will write the first 2 page spread that my magazine will feature. I still need to continue my research on the basics of creating a magazine and I need too grasp an understanding of how long a typical magazine article would be. In conversing with Mr. Elsbree he told Hannah and I that about 50% of the magazine should be made up of Ads. My flat plan can be seen below. - Hope Bumgarner
1/6/17 2 Page Spread Layouts
Today I ventured into the unknown. I have never used any type of software to create a 2 page spread before. With the help of my teacher and my partner Hannah I was able to navigate through the Adobe In-design and eventually become comfortable with how to use it. At first I was unsure how I wanted to form my layout. I had no plan as to how I wanted to organize the pages. After trying multiple different formats I finally created one I liked the best. I decided to include 3 pictures on this page. The 2 page spread I decided on is shown below! - Hope Bumgarner

1/4/17 Photo Shoot
We were just off for 2 weeks for Winter Break. Over this time I was able to get together with Nick and have a photo shoot. While Most of his gator baseball apparel resides in his dorm room in Gainesville, we made due with the gator shirt, hat, and glove he thankfully brought home. It was a bit of a struggle trying to pick a time in which Nick and I could meet up to take the pictures. Finally, on January 2nd we were finally able to get everything in place to complete the shoot. I took about 10-15 pictures of Nick using an IPhone 6 camera against a white background. I had him pose in a variety of ways. I obtained mostly mid shots and a few close ups. I will include the best few pictures that I am most likely to include in my magazine below. - Hope Bumgarner
